An island palace in Lake Pichola, also called the «Lake Garden Palace», built by three successive rulers of Mewar and completed under Maharana Jagat Singh I (1628–1652), whose name it bears. The royal family used it as a summer retreat and party palace. In 1623 Prince Khurram, later the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, stayed here while in revolt against his father, and the Gul Mahal was built as his refuge; the setting is said to have inspired some of his ideas for the Taj Mahal. The three-storey palace has pavilions, courtyards and gardens; rows of carved stone elephants greet visitors at the jetty, and its terraces look out over the City Palace, the Udaipur skyline and the surrounding hills. It is reached by boat from the City Palace jetty on lake cruises, and today holds a restaurant and café and hosts weddings and private events. Sunset is the best time to visit.
