A man-made lake in the heart of Udaipur, created in 1362 and named after the nearby village of Picholi; it is one of a chain of linked lakes built to supply the city with water, earning Udaipur the names «City of Lakes» and «Venice of the East». Two islands in the lake each carry a palace: Jag Niwas, now a luxury hotel that seems to float on the water, and Jag Mandir, once a royal summer retreat, while palaces, temples and old houses line the shore with stone bathing steps, the ghats. The best way to enjoy it is a sunset boat ride, when the walls of the City Palace turn gold and the lights reflect in the water, or a rooftop café overlooking the lake around Gangaur Ghat. Viewing the lake is free; boat rides cost from about ₹400 to ₹1,000 depending on time and boat, per visitor guides. Sunset is the loveliest hour.
