The Botanical Garden is the emblem of Curitiba, capital of Paraná in southern Brazil, known for its urban planning and parks. It opened in 1991 on 240,000 square metres, laid out as a formal French garden with geometric beds of flowers, fountains, small waterfalls and lakes. At its heart stands the famous glasshouse, a 458-square-metre greenhouse with an Art Nouveau metal frame inspired by London's Crystal Palace, holding tropical plants. There is also a botanical museum with one of Brazil's largest herbaria, and a museum of the environmentally minded artist Franz Krajcberg. Entry is free; the best time for photos is early morning before the crowds, or late in the day.
