Tianjin's best-known old bridge, a 97.64-metre steel bascule bridge over the Hai River in front of the main railway station; it opened in 1927 as the «International Bridge» in the era of the foreign concessions, and its central span lifts to let ships through. The bridge once opened four times a day for large ships; today it is a protected monument and one of Tianjin's emblems in old and new photographs alike. From the bridge a promenade runs along both banks among old buildings, with the great Century Clock close by and Jiefang North Road, once nicknamed «the Wall Street of the East» for its many old foreign banks, while night cruises leave from the banks. The bridge and the promenade are free and always open, per visitor guides. The evening, when the bridges and buildings along the river are lit, is the best time.
