A pedestrian bridge over the Isar in Munich, linking the Lehel bank to the Museumsinsel. Its name means cable walkway, which explains its origin: it was built to carry electricity cables across the river, and the pedestrian deck was added later. This is a common pattern in cities โ infrastructure acquiring a second public function. What makes it worth stopping on is what you see from it: the Isar along this stretch is broad, with gravel islands and trees on the banks, and in summer people sit on the gravel and swim in the cold water. The bridge is a good point from which to see all of it. Immediately south of it stands the river theatre โ stone steps descending to the water where people sit in the evening. The Isar through Munich was restored between 2000 and 2011 by removing the concrete embankments, which is what made this use possible at all. A stop of minutes on the way to or from the Deutsches Museum.

Over the Isar, between Lehel and the Museumsinsel
An island in the Isar holding the Deutsches Museum, the largest museum of science and technology in the world. It should not be confused with Berlin's Museum Island, an entirely different UNESCO-listed group of art and antiquities museums. Munich's island is small and reached by several footbridges, this among them.
From the Kabelsteg south along the eastern bank to the Flaucher โ the broad gravel island area where Munich's residents gather in summer. About three kilometres on a shaded path, passing the Deutsches Museum and the river theatre on the way. Or north to the standing wave on the Eisbach, where people surf inside the city.
