The calmest place to sit in the old town, away from the crush of the main street.
Karlsplatz is a quiet square in Heidelberg's old town near the market square, and much less crowded than its neighbours. Around it stand historic buildings including the Academy of Sciences, and small cafés where students sit more than tourists. At its centre is a modern fountain, with trees shading the seating. The square also gives a good angle on the castle. It is the right place to sit in the old town away from the crush of the main street, and at lower prices.

A good view of the castle between the trees, with far fewer photographers.

Karlsplatz, 69117 Heidelberg
The Marktplatz is larger, more famous and busier, with the church and town hall. Karlsplatz is smaller, quieter, cheaper and used by locals and students. For sitting and resting this is better; for the well-known scene, the other.
Fifteen minutes passing through, or an hour if you sit in a café. It is a resting place more than a monument.
Yes — it sits at the foot of the road up to the castle, so you can rest there before or after the climb. The funicular station is nearby on the Kornmarkt.
