A stone fortress on the bank of the Vrbas in the heart of Banja Luka, on the site of an ancient Roman camp, expanded in the Middle Ages and then rebuilt and fortified by the Ottomans in the sixteenth century, the period of most of its present walls and towers. High stone walls, arched gates and corner towers ring a wide grassy court that hosts summer festivals, concerts and exhibitions. The walls above the river look over the clear green water of the Vrbas, where locals paddle traditional wooden boats. Entry is free and it is open by day. The walls are high with no railings in places, so take care with children. A riverside promenade and cafés surround the fortress. Pair it with the Ferhadija Mosque a few minutes' walk away and an evening stroll along the Vrbas.
