Climb from Slussen square via Katarinavagen or the adjacent stairs to the upper Sodermalm level, then walk to the bridge entrance from the top side โ the walkway is open to pedestrians with no gate. The lift only saves you the climb, useful with a pushchair or if stairs are difficult.

The Katarina Elevator is an iron lift connecting Slussen harbour below with the heights of Sodermalm above, across a drop of more than thirty metres. The original was built in 1883 and ran on steam, among the world's first public lifts โ replaced by an electric version in 1935, then closed for decades before returning to service after a full restoration. Its real value is not the ride but the suspended bridge at the top: a metal walkway running horizontally from the lift head to the cliff edge, giving one of Stockholm's most celebrated views โ the whole of Gamla Stan, Slussen harbour, the Royal Palace and Skeppsholmen in a single frame, at an ideal height, neither so high that detail vanishes nor so low that things block each other. The practical point is that the bridge and platform are freely open to pedestrians from the street above โ you need not ride the lift at all. Best timing is half an hour before sunset, when the light strikes the coloured facades of Gamla Stan head-on.
