Kungsparken is old, small and central, a nineteenth-century city promenade with mature trees, while Pildammsparken is many times larger, further south, and given to open space for sport and gatherings. On a tight schedule you pass through Kungsparken automatically with the castle, whereas Pildammsparken needs a deliberate separate visit.

Kungsparken is Malmo's oldest public park, opened in 1872 on ground that had been part of the castle fortifications, and laid out in the free English manner: a winding lake, curving paths, small artificial hills and trees imported from around the world โ entirely away from strict French symmetry. It adjoins the castle directly, and together with the castle's botanical garden forms a continuous green band running west to the water. Its trees are among the city's oldest and most varied, rare species having been planted deliberately in the nineteenth century so the park would serve as a teaching plant collection as well as a promenade. Malmo's casino stands on the northern edge in an elegant historic building, and a lake with swans, waterfowl and a small bridge lies at the centre. The park is relatively small and walkable in half an hour, but it is the natural link between the castle and the city centre, so you pass through it regardless.
