La Condamine is the central ward of the Principality of Monaco, in a small valley between the Rock and Monte Carlo. Its landmarks include Port Hercules, the Rainier III Nautical Stadium and an old farmers' market at Place d'Armes. It is the second oldest area of the country and the most everyday in feel, with its buildings, shops and cafés. Its name comes from a vulgar Latin term for medieval land near the castle, reserved for the feudal lord and exempt from taxes, and the ward itself dates from that period. In 1911 it became one of the principality's three communes, until a single commune returned in 1918. Early 20th-century travel writers recommended its hotels as much cheaper than those at Monte Carlo. Elegant European buildings line the streets in red, yellow and brown, with balconies and green shutters. Grand Prix stands appear along the road in racing season, and high spots show the harbour, the Rock and the mountains together. The Place d'Armes market has been held since 1880, with fruit, vegetables and food, and it is the liveliest place in the ward in the morning. The church of Sainte-Dévote is about 370 m away in a straight line, and Rampe Major starts here for the Rock, so the ward makes a good starting point for a walk. The market is best in the morning, so go early. Many streets close during Grand Prix week, so check routes. Keep your things safe in crowds and mind the traffic when crossing.
