Monaco's main harbour, a deep basin between the old Rock and Monte Carlo, lined with some of the world's grandest yachts along elegant quays, with roots in antiquity, when it was a natural anchorage named after Hercules. Around the harbour runs the street circuit of the Formula One Grand Prix, the most famous motor race in the world, usually held in late May or early June, when the port turns into grandstands and the yachts fill with spectators. On the quay are cafés, restaurants and an open-air Olympic seawater pool that becomes an ice rink in winter, and the harbour hosts yacht shows and seasonal markets. The harbour promenade is a lovely place to stroll, especially at sunset. Strolling the harbour is free at any time, and short boat trips leave from it for a fee. During Grand Prix week hotel prices soar and some streets close.
