Labrador Nature Reserve, known locally as Labrador Park, lies in the south of mainland Singapore, about 6 km west of Raffles Place in a straight line. It holds the only rocky sea cliff on the mainland that is open to the public. Since 2002, 10 hectares of its coastal vegetation and rocky shore have been protected as a nature reserve managed by the National Parks Board. The whole area was once known as Pasir Panjang Beach, Malay for «long beach», a long strip of coast before land reclamation changed its shape and a seawall and modern park were built. Raised wooden boardwalks wind through dense tropical trees, palms and ferns down to the coast, where huge trees lean over calm water and nearby green islands. At low tide the rocky shore appears. Visitors walk the boardwalks through the coastal forest, sit on the lawns by the sea and stroll along the seawall. It is quiet and less crowded than the city's other parks.
