Lago Negro, the Black Lake, is the best-known park in Gramado, the mountain town in southern Brazil built by German and Italian immigrants, which with its architecture and cool climate feels like a European village. The lake is artificial: Leopoldo Rosenfeld created it in 1953 on land burned by a fire in 1942, damming a stream and planting around it trees grown from seedlings brought from Germany's Black Forest, which gave it its name. A 740-metre walking path circles the lake among the dark trees and the blue and violet hydrangeas the region is known for. Swan-shaped pedal boats float on the water. Entry is free and the park is open all day; it is loveliest early in the morning when mist rises off the water. In winter temperatures can fall close to freezing, so bring warm clothes.
