A museum in Venice that does not sell tickets. Entry to Le Stanze del Vetro has been free since it opened in the summer of 2012, which produces the city's neatest inversion: the vaporetto that gets you there costs about EUR 9.50, more than everything you will pay once inside. It sits on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, directly behind the church, a few minutes over the water from Piazza San Marco — and it is among the quietest rooms in Venice: wide white galleries by Annabelle Selldorf Architects, and few enough visitors to notice, in a city that is otherwise being crushed by its own popularity. The project is a partnership between the Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Pentagram Stiftung, and its argument is that glass belongs in the history of modern art rather than on a souvenir shelf. The programme has traditionally alternated two exhibitions a year — one in spring on the use of glass in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art and design, one in autumn devoted to the designers who worked for Venini, drawing on the company's historic archive — though recent seasons have been given over to a single long show. The 2026 exhibition covers the decade 1948–1958 and the relationship between Murano glass and the Venice Biennale, curated by Marino Barovier, running from 19 April to 22 November. Everything is lit with real care and captioned seriously in Italian and English — closer to published scholarship than to a tourist display, which is exactly why it rewards anyone who cares. Be clear that this is a separate visit from the church of San Giorgio Maggiore and its bell-tower, even though they share the island: the church is free to enter and the lift up the campanile is paid at its door, while Le Stanze del Vetro is a different building behind the church, in the west wing of the former boarding school, free and on its own schedule. It opens 10:00 to 19:00 and closes on Wednesdays, and it also goes dark entirely between exhibitions: in 2026 the show runs 19 April to 22 November, with nothing on display over the winter. Check the official site before you board, because a wasted trip here means a second boat fare for nothing. The island is one of the very few places in Venice with no bridges and no steps: you step off the pontoon and walk on the flat to the door, which genuinely matters if you are pushing a pram or a wheelchair, and the galleries keep a wheelchair for anyone who needs one. In exchange there is little more than a small cafe on the island and nowhere set aside for prayer, so plan food and prayer back in the city on either side of the crossing. And honestly: if glass and design mean nothing to you, this is not a compulsory stop and skipping it will not damage your trip. But if a quiet, polished, free hour facing one of the finest waterfronts in Venice appeals, few corners of the city hand it over this easily. Day visitors should also remember the city access fee, which can apply on peak-day dates — check before you travel.
