A park in the old Xiguan quarter of west Guangzhou, created in 1958 on 27 hectares, 62 per cent of them water, in four linked lakes dug by local people to ease the area's flooding; it took its present name in 1960. The park sits on Lizhiwan, «Lychee Bay», known for centuries for its lychee trees, canals and gardens, where famous gardens and orchards followed one another through the dynasties; before the city had many public parks, it was where people came to escape the summer heat, rowing and strolling. Entry is free, with stone bridges, southern-style pavilions and paths between the lakes, and it combines easily with the nearby old lanes of Xiguan.
