LX Factory is Lisbon's factory come back alive: an 1846 textile compound directly beneath the legs of the 25 de Abril bridge — abandoned by industry, settled by creators (2008): fifty shops, studios and restaurants in the brick halls, graffiti on every wall, the bridge's roar overhead as the place's rhythm. Its icon is Livraria Ler Devagar: a bookshop in an old printing hall with a two-storey wall of books and a flying bicycle hung mid-air — among the world's most photographed bookshops — around it bakeries, burger kitchens and world tables with rooftops facing the bridge. Sunday brings its open market of handmade and vintage — evening turns it young and late. It is Lisbon's now against Belém's yesterday — fifteen tram minutes apart: pair them as one day of complementary opposites.
