MALBA, the Latin American Art Museum of Buenos Aires, opened on 21 September 2001 around the collection of the Argentine businessman Eduardo Costantini and is run by a non-profit foundation. It gathers work by Latin American artists from the start of the 20th century to the present and welcomes more than a million visitors a year. Its best-known painting is «Abaporu» by the Brazilian Tarsila do Amaral, an emblem of Brazilian modernism, alongside work by artists from Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and beyond. The museum stages major temporary shows all year and has a cinema, a library and a café. The building is modern, in stone and glass, chosen through an open competition, and stands in Palermo near the parks and other museums. It opens Thursday to Monday 12:00-20:00 and Wednesday 11:00-20:00, and closes on Tuesdays.
