The José Hernández Folk Art Museum is named after the author of Martín Fierro, the best-known epic poem of gaucho life, and fills an old house on Avenida del Libertador in Palermo. It is devoted to Argentine folk art and crafts, and to valuing craftspeople as creators. Its collection began with the country objects of Félix Bunge, who gave the house, and grew from there; its most important purchase, in 1949, was the collection of Carlos Daws, a gathering of gaucho heritage. Today it holds rural silverwork, textiles and ponchos, leather and carved wood, mate cups of gourd and horn, wicker baskets and painted papier-mâché figures, alongside contemporary crafts collected since 2004 from the city's crafts biennial. Its library is one of the country's most important on folklore and gaucho literature. It closes on Tuesdays, and foreigners pay a higher fee than residents.
