The Aloisio Magalhães Museum of Modern Art, MAMAM, is a museum in central Recife regarded as a reference for modern and contemporary visual arts, whose shows and records have helped shape the city's audience and art scene. It stands on Rua da Aurora facing the Capibaribe River, in a neoclassical building of 1889 built for a social club and used as Recife's city hall from 1936. The museum has three floors with seven exhibition rooms, the «Aquário Oiticica» for small special projects, a library specialising in modern and contemporary art, storage, an auditorium and an inner courtyard, 1,800 square metres in all. Its rooms host temporary shows it organises or receives from Brazil and abroad; a retrospective of the artist Jonathas de Andrade filled all three floors in 2023. Entry is free, and it opens Wednesday to Sunday per its 2026 programme; check current exhibitions.
