A morning market held almost every day along the east bank of the Miyagawa River in Takayama, counted among Japan's three great morning markets with those of Wajima and Katsuura, and one of the town's sights. It began in its present form on 1 May 1953, but Takayama's morning markets go back to the Edo period. Farmers and craftspeople set up 50 to 70 stalls under white awnings between the river and a row of shops: seasonal vegetables and local fruit such as apples and peaches, pickles including the famous red turnip, mochi rice cakes, mitarashi dango skewers and hoba miso, grilled on a magnolia leaf. Local crafts are sold too, such as sarubobo dolls and wood carvings, along with flowers and plants. Townspeople shop here, not just visitors, and in the last days of the year it becomes a market for New Year goods. Entry is free, and it runs from 7:00 to noon from April to November and from 8:00 from December to March, per visitor guides. Fewer stalls open on rainy or snowy days; aim to arrive before 10:00.
