Montjuïc Castle crowns Barcelona's seaside mountain: a seventeenth-century star fortress holding the highest point between city and sea, so its ramparts give the port with its cranes and containers one way and the city stretching to the Sagrada and the hills the other — Barcelona's most complete circular view. Its history is deliberately told un-prettified: the fortress bombarded the city more often than it defended it, and served as prison and execution ground in the Civil War — the exhibits inside recount this with affecting Catalan honesty. Today its moats are gardens, its bastions strolling ground and summer festival stages. Half the pleasure is the approach: the cable car from the funicular station lifts you over the woods to the gate itself — ride it up, then walk down through the mountain's gardens and miradors.

The whole mountain is the point: the castle crowns it, with gardens, miradors, the Miró, the National Palace and the Magic Fountain below — Montjuïc fills a full day if you let it. The castle and its view alone make an excellent ninety minutes.
Cable car, ramparts and cannon are everything they love, and the moat-gardens are safe running ground. The historical-memory rooms are adult fare — simply pass them with the young.
