The only surviving flat among the dozens Mozart moved through in Vienna. He lived here from 1784 to 1787, in his largest, most expensive and happiest home — here he wrote The Marriage of Figaro, here Haydn visited him, and here he received the young Beethoven. The visit starts on the third floor and works down: the top floor covers Vienna in his time — a city of music, gambling and court politics — the middle covers his works and operas, and the last is the flat itself, four rooms with their original floors. The apartment is deliberately empty of furniture, because none of his survived, and this disappoints some visitors. But what you pay for is not objects; it is the place: you stand in the room where Figaro was actually written, two minutes from St Stephen's Cathedral.
