The Sarmiento Historical Museum in Belgrano is devoted to Argentine history in the late nineteenth century, most of its rooms to Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, the writer and educator who led the country from 1868 to 1874, and to his literary work, with sections on his successor Nicolás Avellaneda. It fills an elegant columned building with a small clock tower that was Belgrano's town hall, and it has a special place in history: the national government and Congress met here briefly in 1880, when they had to leave the city centre during the crisis over making Buenos Aires the federal capital. The rooms show Sarmiento's furniture and belongings, documents and pictures from the era. The museum is close to quiet Plaza Belgrano and pairs with a walk around the neighbourhood. Check opening days and fees before visiting.
