In his mother city Picasso's declared dream came true: "a museum for my works in Málaga" — opened in 2003 in the Renaissance-Mudéjar Buenavista palace with two hundred works straight from his family's own keeping: daughter-in-law Christine and grandson Bernard gave the founding gift, making the collection intimate in temper: the Picasso the family kept for itself. The route crosses seventy creative years through every transformation — boyhood academicism to post-Cubism to the merry ceramics of old age — without Guernica and without clamour: a museum of understanding, not spectacle. Beneath the basement, Málaga's layered surprise: Phoenician walls, Roman and Nasrid remains found in restoration. With his birth house on Plaza de la Merced (a small separate museum) the "Málaga, Picasso's city" story completes — and the month's last Sunday is free all day.
