The Théo Brandão Museum of Anthropology and Folklore is a Brazilian museum on Avenida da Paz in Maceió's Jaraguá district, belonging to the Federal University of Alagoas. It was created on 20 August 1975 to house the folk art collection donated to the university by the teacher and folklorist Théo Brandão, after whom it is named. In 1977, for the fifth Brazilian Folklore Festival held in Maceió, the collection moved to the museum's permanent home, an eclectic building on Avenida da Paz facing the sea in the city centre. The museum holds recordings of regional music, popular singing and traditional festivities, records, photographs and films on the folklore of Alagoas, along with rooms of folk craftwork and colourful festival costumes. The museum is a good introduction to the rich popular culture of north-east Brazil, on the seafront near Avenida beach. Entry is usually free; check times.
