The Historical Museum of Japanese Immigration in Brazil is in Liberdade, São Paulo's famous Japanese district in the city centre. The Brazilian Society of Japanese Culture opened it on 18 June 1978 to mark the 70th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil, with the then Crown Prince Akihito of Japan and President Ernesto Geisel at the ceremony. Its collection holds more than 97,000 historical items, including photographs, films and videos. Beyond showing the Japanese families and how they arrived, the museum tells the immigrants' story: the hardships they faced, their first impressions of the new land and how they made their place in the country. On the eighth floor a search system lets people of Japanese descent find information about immigrant relatives by name and surname, such as dates of departure and arrival and their home province. It fits into a walk around Liberdade; check opening times.
