The Sé Cathedral is São Paulo's largest Catholic church, overlooking Praça da Sé in the heart of the old city. Building began in Gothic Revival style in 1913 on the site of the colonial cathedral, to designs by the German architect Maximilian Hehl; it was inaugurated in 1954 for the city's 400th anniversary, and its two towers were only finished in 1967. It is 111 metres long with towers 92 metres high, crowned by a dome inspired by Florence Cathedral, and holds eight thousand people. A curious touch: its column capitals are carved with Brazilian plants and animals, coffee branches, pineapples and armadillos. It was fully restored between 2000 and 2002. The square in front is always crowded, so watch your belongings. Guided visits to the crypt are offered for a small fee.
