Praça Tiradentes is a square in Belo Horizonte at the junction of Afonso Pena and Brasil avenues in the Funcionários district, centred on a statue of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, known as «Tiradentes», martyr of the Inconfidência Mineira, the 18th-century movement for the independence of Minas Gerais. The square opened on 20 August 1962 before the statue was finished, so a plaster replica stood in at the ceremony. The bronze statue by the artist Antônio van der Weill was finally set on a new base on 5 January 1963, six and a half metres tall and weighing 1,400 kilograms, correcting the errors of the plaster copy. Since 1995 the city has cleaned the statue every year on 21 April, the anniversary of Tiradentes's execution. The square has long been a stage for popular gatherings and sits on the city's main avenue, making a short stop on a walk along Avenida Afonso Pena.
