The Bahia Museum of Art is the oldest museum in the state, founded in 1918 and among the first ten created in Brazil. It began by preserving Salvador's historical and ethnographic heritage, then turned increasingly to the arts, and in 1982 moved into the Palácio da Vitória on the «Corredor da Vitória», the tree-lined street that was once the city's smartest address. The collection holds about 5,000 pieces: paintings by 19th-century Bahian artists such as José Teófilo de Jesus and Presciliano Silva, colonial furniture, 19th-century tiles, ceramics, glass and Brazilian, European and Asian decorative arts, along with a library of some 12,000 books and the historian Góis Calmon's collection. Since the Museu Rodin Bahia closed in 2023, the Rodin sculptures it held have been in this museum's care. Entry is free. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00, has a café and parking, and pairs easily with a walk along the Corredor da Vitória towards the Barra lighthouse.
