The Gabinete Português de Leitura, the Portuguese Reading Room of Bahia, is a cultural, literary and Lusophone studies institution in Salvador, founded on 2 March 1863 to provide the city's large Portuguese community with books and newspapers. Its motto is «Saudades e perseverança», longing and perseverance. It moved between several premises until its current seat was built on the Praça da Piedade, begun in 1915 and opened on 3 February 1918. The architect Alberto Borelli designed it in the Neo-Manueline style, like the Royal Portuguese Reading Room in Rio de Janeiro, with Arab influences, and its façade is fronted by statues of the navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral and the poet Camões. Inside are murals of the giant Adamastor and of Camões saving his epic, The Lusiads, along with the library and the Centre for Portuguese Studies, Casa Fernando Pessoa, opened in 1984. It usually opens Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00.
