The Museu de Arte do Rio, known by its initials MAR, opened on 1 March 2013 on Praça Mauá between the city centre and the port zone, part of a project that revived the old waterfront. It occupies two buildings, one of them the eclectic-style Palacete Dom João VI given over to exhibition rooms, and is run by a partnership between the city and the Roberto Marinho Foundation. Its exhibitions explore Rio's history and its image in art, mixing older and contemporary works with changing temporary shows, and it runs the Escola do Olhar arts school. The Museum of Tomorrow, which has its own page, is a few steps away on the same square. It opens 11:00-18:00 (last entry 17:00) and closes on Wednesdays. Tickets are R$20, entry is free on Tuesdays, and cash is not accepted. Some works on show may include artistic nudity.
