The Brazilian Navy's cultural centre stands on the old customs docks in central Rio, on the Orla Conde promenade between Largo da Candelária and Praça XV. It opened on 20 January 1996 to show an important part of the navy's collection across about 1,100 square metres of exhibition space. Its highlights are real vessels you can board: the submarine Riachuelo, built in 1973, which sailed more than 181,000 nautical miles before retiring; the destroyer escort Bauru; a full-size replica of a Portuguese ship from the age of discovery, built for the 500th anniversary; and the tug Laurindo Pitta of 1910, which served in the First World War. Indoors is John VI's royal galley, built in Salvador in 1808, in which the royal family took outings on the bay. Boats leave from here for Ilha Fiscal, with its green Gothic palace, and for tours around the mouth of the bay. One ticket covers all the open exhibits, entry is free on Tuesdays except holidays, the site closes in heavy rain, and the submarine is not advised for older visitors, pregnant women or anyone claustrophobic.
