Praça da Liberdade is Belo Horizonte's civic heart, laid out between 1895 and 1897 as the city itself was built as the new planned capital of Minas Gerais in place of Ouro Preto, on a levelled hill chosen as the setting for the Palácio da Liberdade and the first ministry buildings. It was listed as heritage in 1977. Buildings from different eras surround it: eclectic 19th-century palaces and modernist blocks, among them the wavy Niemeyer residential building, and the State Public Library. The square itself has gardens, palm-shaded walks, fountains and a bandstand. After the state government moved to new headquarters in 2010, the buildings around the square became museums, libraries and cultural centres known as the Circuito Liberdade, most of them free. Allow half a day to move between its museums.
