The Floriano Peixoto Palace Museum, MUPA, occupies the former seat of the Alagoas state government in central Maceió, a building the historian Craveiro Costa called «the most beautiful in the state for the sumptuousness of its style and proportions». It is now a cultural facility run by the state culture secretariat, with some of its halls open to the public. Building began in 1893 to the design of the military engineer Carlos Jorge Calheiros de Lima, stopped for lack of funds and restarted several times until, from 1900, the architect Luiz Lucariny took over and changed the original plan, transforming the facade with elegant ornament in the eclectic taste of the time. The palace was formally inaugurated on 16 September 1902, during the celebrations of Alagoas's political emancipation. The museum holds temporary exhibitions, among them the «Mulheres» show extended in 2026. Entry is free and hours differ between sources; check with the culture secretariat before going.
