The Teatro Deodoro is the most traditional theatre in Maceió, capital of Alagoas, on Praça Marechal Deodoro in the city centre, owned by the state government. Its foundation stone was laid on 11 June 1905; it was designed by the architect Luiz Lucariny and opened on 15 November 1910, marking the 21st anniversary of the proclamation of the republic, and it is named after Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, a son of Alagoas and Brazil's first president. The first performance on its Italian-style stage was the play «Um Beijo» by the Alagoas writer J. Britto. The auditorium seats about 650 between the stalls and boxes, with decoration reflecting the grandeur of early-20th-century theatres. It reopened in 2010 after a meticulous restoration for its centenary. The theatre is part of the state's cultural heritage, with a regular programme of the best local and national shows ticketed by programme, and it can be seen from the square at any time.
