The Museu Paranaense, founded on 25 September 1876, is described as the third-oldest museum in Brazil. Run by the state, it occupies the Palácio São Francisco with 4,700 m² of space, showing historical exhibitions from its collection and temporary shows on historical and social themes, with a library, auditorium and laboratory. Between 1941 and 1954 it went through a 'scientific phase' noted for zoology, geology and botany, and in 1945 its journal published Reinhard Maack's monograph, the first formal defence of Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift. Free; Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-17:30, closed Mondays.
