The Paço da Liberdade, the Liberty Palace, is a historic building in central Curitiba, opened on 24 February 1916 as the city hall on the site of the old municipal market, demolished in 1912 to make way for it. Mayor Cândido de Abreu authorised its construction in 1914. The building combines neoclassical details with Art Nouveau designs, built of brick on a base of concrete blocks and dressed stone, and it held the first lift in Curitiba. It remained the city hall until 13 November 1969, when the last mayor to govern from it left. It is listed by the city, the state and the national heritage institute. After a meticulous restoration funded by SESC, it reopened on 29 March 2009 as a cultural centre offering exhibitions, shows and events. Check the programme.
