Mustafa Pasha Mosque stands on a terrace above the Old Bazaar, just below the fortress walls, and is the best-preserved Ottoman mosque in Skopje. It was built in 1492 by Çoban Mustafa Pasha, who later served as a vizier at the court of Sultan Selim I, and it has kept its original form with no later additions. It follows the classic style of Istanbul: a single large dome 16.3 metres across and a slender minaret 47 metres high, with a marble plaque bearing Arabic inscriptions above the main door. In the rose garden beside it is the türbe, the tomb of Umi, the founder's daughter. The mosque was damaged in the 1963 earthquake and reopened in 2011 after a five-year restoration funded by Turkey. It is an active mosque that welcomes visitors outside prayer times: dress modestly, women cover their hair, and shoes come off at the door. The terrace above the bazaar is a quiet place to rest after the shops.
