Suli An is an Ottoman inn in the heart of Skopje's Old Bazaar, built in the mid-15th century by Isa Bey Isaković. Its name comes from the Turkish Sulu Han, «the inn with water», probably because a small stream once ran beside it. The han covers about 2,100 square metres. In Ottoman times it was a classic town inn for travellers and traders with their caravans, built around an inner courtyard ringed by arcades and rooms on two floors. It was damaged in the 1963 earthquake and rebuilt in 1972. Today it holds the permanent exhibition «History of the Old Bazaar» of the Museum of the City of Skopje, along with the Faculty of Fine Arts, so it is the best place to learn the market's story before you wander it. Visitor guides list a token fee for the museum, and the courtyard itself is a quiet, shaded spot amid the bustle.
