The National Flag Memorial is a monumental stone complex on the bank of the Paraná in Rosario, inaugurated on 20 June 1957, the anniversary of the death of Manuel Belgrano, who designed the Argentine flag and first raised it on 27 February 1812 on an island across the river. It was built of stone from the Andes over some ten thousand square metres, designed by the architects Ángel Guido and Alejandro Bustillo with sculptures by José Fioravanti and others. It has three parts: the 70-metre tower, with Belgrano's crypt at its base; the wide Civic Courtyard, where large ceremonies and shows are held; and the Triumphal Propylaeum, home to the Hall of the Flags of the Americas. The top of the tower looks over the city, the river and its islands. The Hall of Flags and the crypt are free. The lift to the top of the tower costs a token fee, Monday to Friday 13:00-18:00 and weekends and holidays 09:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00.
