Teatro El Círculo is one of Argentina's leading opera houses, in central Rosario, famous for the acoustics of its main hall. A company called «La Ópera» began building it in 1888 and went bankrupt, leaving the half-built shell for years until locals called it the «Thieves' Cave». The German Emilio Schiffner then bought it, completed it to new plans, brought an acoustics specialist from Germany, and opened it on 7 June 1904 as the Teatro de la Ópera with Verdi's «Otello». Since then it has hosted the world's great opera companies; its horseshoe-shaped hall rises in tiers of boxes, with a grand lobby and foyer. It is visited on guided tours booked ahead by email, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30, covering the hall, foyer, stage and dressing rooms, about 75 minutes. Payment is cash only, with a minimum of four people.
