One of the foremost art museums in the United States, on the National Mall, founded in 1937 by act of Congress after the banker Andrew Mellon gave his collection and building funds as a gift to the American people. Entry is free. It is made up of two buildings joined by an underground passage: the domed neoclassical West Building by John Russell Pope, and the modern East Building with its triangular geometry by the architect I. M. Pei, next to a sculpture garden. The collection traces Western art from the Middle Ages to the present, with works by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Monet and Van Gogh and the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas, while the East Building holds the largest mobile Alexander Calder ever made. Entry is free. The museum includes traditional art with statues and figure paintings, so choose the galleries that suit you; the West Building's indoor garden courts with their fountains are among its loveliest spaces.
