The National History Museum of Moldova is one of the country's most important museums, in the historic centre of Chișinău. It holds more than 263,000 items, 165,000 of them national heritage, and stands about 300 metres in a straight line from Stephen the Great Park. The museum was founded on 21 December 1983 in the restored historic building of the former First Boys' Gymnasium. Its sections cover ancient history and archaeology, medieval history, the history of Bessarabia, contemporary history and a treasury, and it hosts about 15 exhibitions a year. The long, pale classical front centres on a columned entrance under a small clock tower, reached by a broad stairway. In the forecourt stands a copy of Rome's Capitoline Wolf on a red pedestal. Inside, painted pottery of the ancient Cucuteni culture, with its swirling patterns, sits alongside finds from many eras. Check opening times and photography rules before you visit. The museum is about 600 metres from the Nativity Cathedral, so the two make an easy walk in the centre.
