Not here โ at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde (half an hour by train): five ships raised from the fjord where they were deliberately sunk as a barrier a thousand years ago, with summer sailing on living replicas. The National Museum is the true Viking vault: in the rococo Prince's Palace (1740s) Denmark is told from the Stone Age to the present โ its summit a prehistory no one else owns: the golden bronze Sun Chariot (1400 BC, a horse drawing the sun disc โ Denmark's most famous relic), the bronze lur horns still played, the bog bodies preserved with their skin, and the Viking silver and gold hoards with their runestones. The ethnographic halls rank among the world's richest โ the Inuit and Greenland especially (the Danish colony) with kayaks and polar dress โ and the children's hall is a miniature museum where they dress as Vikings and board their ship: among Europe's most successful family museums. At the centre's heart beside Tivoli and the Glyptotek: a museum triangle for a rainy day (Copenhagen rains) โ and two hours here cover the Vikings, the Sun Chariot and the children.
