Munch made four versions in different media over the years โ two (1893 pastel, 1910 tempera) passed to the state and sit here at the National Museum; two (pastel and lithograph) stayed his personal estate and went to the Munch Museum at his death. So the two institutions โ not merely two buildings โ share one icon by dual historical right.

Norway's National Museum is all Nordic Europe's largest: opened (2022) in a massive stone harbourside building to gather under one roof what five museums once scattered โ art, architecture, design and craft from the medieval to the contemporary. Its great Munch Hall holds his other Scream (the 1893 original pastel โ the world's most famous version, distinct from the museum's oil copies) beside Madonna and The Sick Child, with treasures of Norway's golden-age painters, European Impressionists, and rare Viking wooden panels. The top-floor glass Light Hall enters free and opens Akershus and harbour views โ the museum itself routed thematically, not strictly chronologically, workable as a brisk hour or a deep half-day depending on choice.
