The Omniversum is a dome cinema in The Hague's museum quarter, among the first of its kind built in Europe — it opened in 1984 and still works to the same purpose. What separates it from an ordinary cinema is the shape rather than just the size: the screen is a tilted dome enclosing the viewer in front, above and to the sides, so the projection fills the whole field of vision. The seats recline so that you look upward naturally. The result is a sense of movement and immersion no flat screen gives, however large. The programme is short documentaries — about forty minutes — on space, the deep sea, nature and volcanoes, filmed specifically for the format. It suits children well and anyone wanting a break from museums. It merged with the neighbouring Museon in 2021, and a combined ticket is the norm.
