Paraguay's seat of government, an elegant white palace on the Bay of Asunción, built between 1857 and 1867 for Francisco Solano López, son of the president of the day, in neoclassical style with Gothic touches, a central tower and arched arcades. The palace stands in a neat garden of palms, flowerbeds and paved paths, with the river behind. At night it is lit in white and colours, becoming one of the capital's finest sights, drawing people to take photos from the street and the garden opposite. It opens to visitors on special occasions and limited tours, but its façade and garden can be seen from outside at any time. Around it are the old town's historic buildings, the new riverfront Costanera and the Casa de la Independencia a few minutes away. The government area is guarded, so keep away from the gates; photos from outside are allowed. Paraguayan summers are very hot and humid from November to March, so carry water and a hat; winter is milder for sightseeing.
