Palacio Libertad is a vast cultural centre in Buenos Aires's former Central Post Office, a Beaux-Arts palace designed by the French architect Norbert Maillart, who took New York's post office as his model. Building dragged on because of the soft ground reclaimed from the river, but once finished it became one of the city's most admired buildings. After the post office moved out, it opened as a cultural centre in 2010, was fully inaugurated in 2015 and took its present name in 2024. With more than 100,000 square metres, it is among the largest cultural centres in Latin America. Its best-known hall, nicknamed «La Ballena Azul», «the Blue Whale», for its curved blue form, is home to the National Symphony Orchestra and has a large pipe organ, while a glazed dome on top serves as a viewpoint and galleries host changing exhibitions. Entry is free, as are many concerts, and free evening tours visit the ninth floor and its viewpoints.
