The Casa Rosada, the «Pink House», is the seat of Argentina's presidency, home to the president's office, facing the historic Plaza de Mayo in the heart of Buenos Aires. Its distinctive pink colour has made it one of the city's most famous buildings, and it has been a National Historic Monument since 1942. It stands on the site of an old fort built in 1594 on the riverbank, when the water still reached here; it housed the Spanish governors and then the national governments from 1810, and the present palace was built in the late nineteenth century by joining two buildings behind one facade centred on a great arch. Behind it a museum shows objects linked to the country's presidents and remains of the old fort walls. Free guided weekend visits, booked online, are held at times, but they have been suspended for individuals in several periods, so check the website before going. The facade can always be seen from Plaza de Mayo.
