Malta's oldest arts society

A palace from the era of the Knights of St John on Republic Street, Valletta's main thoroughfare, occupied today by Malta's oldest arts society. The building was originally a knight's residence, and later passed to the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, an institution founded in the nineteenth century and still operating. That continuity is what makes the place interesting: a sixteenth-century palace still in living cultural use rather than displayed behind a rope. Inside are exhibition rooms hosting work by contemporary Maltese artists and rotating shows, alongside staircases, ceilings and architectural detail from the original period. The combination of the two is the experience. The society also runs classes and workshops, so the building is occupied by people rather than only by visitors. Practical points: entry to the exhibitions is usually free or by small donation. Hours are office hours and it may close on public holidays — check before going. The location is on the main street, so you pass it anyway.

Republic Street, Valletta
Yes for half an hour, especially as it is free and on your route along Republic Street. Do not go expecting an organised museum: these are changing exhibition rooms inside a historic building. The value is seeing the interior of a Knights-era palace without a ticket.
The Grandmaster's Palace was the seat of the Knights' rule and then of the British governors: it is vast, furnished and presented as a ticketed museum. This is a far smaller palace in the use of a civic society, free to enter, and its content is contemporary art. The first is for official history, the second for Malta's living art scene.
